Iowa Youth Come Away Winners from
Diamond Conservation Fund

Dubuque, Iowa - Aug 12 - press release

Pheasants Forever and Diamond Jo Casinos announce the second distribution of grants from the Diamond Conservation Fund - totaling $3,750 - that will benefit four local wildlife habitat restoration and youth conservation education projects in northeast Iowa.

Created by Pheasants Forever, funds for the unique Diamond Conservation Fund are provided by a designated group of slot machines located at the Diamond Jo Casino properties in Dubuque and Northwood, Iowa. Whenever a player hits the jackpot on one of the machines in the designated slot bank, Diamond Jo matches the jackpot with an equal donation to the Diamond Conservation Fund. Distributions from the Diamond Conservation Fund are advised upon by a locally selected committee. The fund has already put more than $23,000 toward conservation initiatives.

"In two years, the partnership between Pheasants Forever and Diamond Jo Casinos has initiated or boosted nine great conservation projects, said Tom Fuller, Pheasants Forever's Regional Representative in Eastern Iowa, "This year, it's fantastic to see three youth-oriented projects selected. We're fond of great conservation projects that have an obvious youth focus to them."

"Diamond Jo Casinos is absolutely delighted to continue partnering with Pheasants Forever," said Jonathan Swain, Chief Operating Officer for Peninsula Gaming, L.L.C., Diamond Jo Casino's parent company, "In doing so, we continue providing the community with grants that benefit environment conservation projects and educate our children about the importance of taking care of our land and wildlife. We look forward to providing grants to more projects in the future that correlate with the Diamond Jo Conservation Fund mission 'to protect and preserve our environment.'"

The four projects selected from the recent application process to the Diamond Conservation Fund include:

Heritage Classic Youth Day - The Diamond Conservation Fund has awarded $1,500 to the annual Heritage Day Classic. The Dubuqueland Pheasants Forever Chapter and 14 other local organizations are involved in this free youth event, which offers hunting, fishing and wildlife habitat activities for youngsters. The funding will allow the expansion of program to 150 boys and girls, as well as improvements to the instructional stations and signage.

Iowa DNR Youth Camps Tuition - The Diamond Conservation Fund has awarded $500 to the Dubuqueland Pheasants Forever Chapter so it can send five boys and girls to the DNR hunting and Conservation Camp for Boys and Outdoor Journey for Girls.

Sageville Elementary School, Outdoor Classroom Butterfly Garden - The Diamond Conservation Fund has awarded $750 for the garden, which will coincide with science curriculum, promoting long term protection of Dubuque County natural resources.

Mines of Spain - Prairie Restoration - The Diamond Conservation Fund has awarded $1,000 for the restoration of 55 acres of existing agricultural fields to native tallgrass prairie.

The Diamond Conservation Fund awards grants to both individual property owners and community groups.

The Diamond Conservation Fund is funded through the contribution of a percentage of play on the Diamond Conservation Fund slot machine banks at the Diamond Jo Casinos in Dubuque and Worth, Iowa. In addition to helping improve the environment while having fun, players are also presented with an educational video about the importance of creating a sustainable environment.
